Cannabigerol (CBG) is a fundamental molecule found in the hemp plant, considered the parent molecule of THC and CBD, among others. Its role is crucial in the development of other cannabinoids.
Discovered in the 1960s, CBG has attracted great interest because it is essential for the formation of other compounds in the plant, such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Without the presence of CBG, the production of these molecules would be compromised.
The complex structure of CBG allows it to interact specifically with the endocannabinoid system of the human body, thereby influencing various physiological processes. Studies suggest that CBG acts on α2-adrenergic receptors and 5HT1A receptors, indicating therapeutic potential in several medical conditions.
CBG can be extracted from the hemp plant by different methods, such as supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) extraction, ethanol extraction, or oil extraction. These techniques make it possible to obtain CBG concentrates for therapeutic use.
CBG has a wide range of potential applications, including as a neuroprotective agent in degenerative diseases, reducing intraocular pressure in glaucoma, alleviating inflammation, alleviating certain urinary disorders, and helping to stimulate the appetite. However, its low presence in the hemp plant, less than 1%, makes its extraction expensive.
Although CBG offers promising therapeutic potential, its rarity in the hemp plant poses a challenge in terms of large-scale production. Research and efforts are underway to develop more efficient production methods, including laboratory synthesis of CBG, to make this molecule more accessible for medical applications.
